I got to know Eckart Lorenz some years ago. He approached our company for getting our coating services and we had some little projects with him. We discussed issues of the CTA project even a few days before he suddenly passed away. It was special to discuss things with him; his way of negotiation and discussion is an exmaple for good cooperation between science and industry.

The first time when I had a privilege to meet Eckart I was impressed by his warm personality, teaching capabilities, energy, enthusiasm, curiosity ... Eckart support from the very beginning was crucial for establishing the Croatian MAGIC group. I see Eckart as the knight of science, a personality embodied the essence of the science, doing for the welfare of human kind and being generous.
For tireless and curious person like Eckat one always expect that will be somewhere around, and in fact it is like that, since we all inherited so much from Eckart - the generous knight of science.

We all will surely miss Eckart. He always had good ideas of how to overcome the problems and get us moving forward. I particularly learnt many things from him, and among all them, the most important one is that I should never give up if I strongly believe in something. Eckart never gave up.

I just learnt Eckart passed away. The Universe is proud of having the direct guidance from Eckart, directly from inside putting lot of light and enthusiasm into the Universe. His light will be seen with the next generation of Gamma-ray telescopes. In each of the registered signals, he will be remembered.

A vivid and stimulating intelligence. Always looking ahead. A charming person with a big scientific integrity. I am sure what he seeded will blow.

with sadness I learn that we have lost Eckhart - he was a wonderful colleague! Always open for discussion and helpful in our joint projects.
I will miss him

It was a really sad day when I heard about Eckart's passing away. I think I have never in my life met a person so dedicated to science but at the same time he always had that spark in his eyes and one knew he was really enjoying it. He was such an inspiration for me. Thanks to Eckart I had an opportunity to visit Max Planck in Munchen a few times and learn from my colleagues which was a great experience. I will always remember his story about the tip of the iceberg and his warning not to be frightened if some unexpected (physics) problems occur on the way - because you never know what lies beneath the surface ...
Eckart encouraged and inspired many of us students in many ways and he will be remembered.

I was deeply saddened to hear about Eckart's passing away & I'd like to send my condolences to his family, especially To Patrizia & to his children.

I've known him all my life because he was a friend of my father's (they went to school together) who passed away a few years ago. For a number of years, Eckart would send long letters written in an almost illegible tiny handwriting from all over the world. When he visited it was always in between #physics projects which he described as if they were tales of pure adventure.

He was also responsible for my picking physics at university: still a teenager, I had the opportunity to visit him at #CERN , at Cornell and later at MPI Munich. He advised me to go into theoretical physics; I can’t remember the exact reason but I think it was something along the lines of "experimental physics is much too hard”. I didn't think he meant it as a comment on scientific or intellectual excellence, but rather as a comment on the increasing complexity of the “business” of experimental physics – this was in the mid-1980s. It was good advice, I think.

The memory of Eckhart working among his machines and the sociable and easy manner with which he led his group left me with a strong positive image of leadership not just in the scientific world. I will forever remember him as a friend, a father to his children and as a most enthusiastic advocate of science as one of the greatest human achievements — passion without pathos, conviction without coercion and love to the details that matter — in life as in science. When I talk to my teenage daughter about experiments in physics today, I use him as an example. I still own the #photomultiplier  he gave me when I was a boy. He’ll be sorely missed.

Goodbye Eckart, your ideas and your enthusiasm encourage me to this day. You are greatly missed. Your dedication in doing and teaching physics, and your tenacious and benevolent attitude have been a great example for many of us younger physicists. I will try to do as you showed us: put not only all of my mind but also my very soul in every day of my research.

It is very sad to learn that a good friend of you will not smile to you again. Eckart smiles and good words over years will stay in my memory.
